Some pictures of the car back on the road again after the transformation.....

It's clean enough to eat off of underneath...

With the new chassis, brakes, steering and suspension it's basically a new Corvette with a classic Corvette body on it.

A slot car with 400+ horsepower. Exactly what I've always wanted to build....

Took the car to Hot August Nights in Reno. Lisa and I met up with great friends Pete and Lorrie Mendez. The car ran great.

In October 2015 I drove the car to Dayton Nevada to get it painted, rechrome everything, and have the stainless steel trim polished. Master Auto Body in Dayton is doing the paint work. They painted my buddy's truck and did an excellent job. Their labor rate is way lower than the Bay area.

Pete was in the Bay area and brought the Stinger hood back with him. I put the hardtop on to get it to the paint shop. The car looks pretty darn good with that top on.

The drive over Hiway 88 to Nevada was phenominal fun. That's exactly the kind of road this car was built for.

I spent 3 days with the shop and Pete stripping everything off so Master Auto body can start prepping the body and cleaning up all of the body gaps. That's the part of the project where I turn it over to the pros and let them work their magic.

I'm having it painted a light blue/silver color. I wanted enough color to offset the chrome. Once all of the paint work is done I'll have a dark blue cloth top put on.

The car should be ready to reassemble around March. I'll go back then and spend a couple of days helping with that.

The color sample in the middle is the color I chose. It's actually a factory Corvette color (Silver Blue) from 1958. I ended up leaving the body totally stock with the exception of adding the "Fuel Injection" emblems on the fenders.

There's no short cuts to a quality paint job. The car got wet-sanded four times, starting with 1200 grit sand paper, then 1600, 2000, then 3,000 before getiing polished. The resulting finish is pretty stunning.

5 long months later the bodywork and paint was done, and I went back to spend another (very) full week putting it back together. Lots of work, but a great experience.

Master Body also did a great job on all of the body gaps, and getting all of the panels to match.

I found some aftermarket coil covers that look like the old Corvette valve covers. Master Body painted them silver to match the rest of the engine compartment.

So, after getting it delivered back home on the flatbed...

...and doing some finish/detail assembly, it's looking pretty good.

All ready for the glamour shots! Pretty much done, and ready for enjoying.

The end. And a reminder that it's never too late for a happy childhood.

The car has won it's category in the most of the car shows I've entered. It's also very competitive against newer Corvettes on autocross tracks.

I'm already thinking hard about the next project....a modernized Woody wagon or a '55 or '57 Nomad are at the top of the list, or a '74 AMC AMX, or a Lotus Europa....
